People Watch
Person A:
The first person I observed was rather interesting but not in the physical aspect. Her behavior was odd and I found her to be a bit humorous as well. She was a plump Chinese lady most probably in her early forties. She was wearing normal clothes, a green shirt and a skirt which looked like office wear. She was sitting beside me in the MRT. She was very normal at the beginning; the fun only began after a few minutes. Suddenly, she took out her bag and was desperately trying to get something out of it. Finally, she took out a mirror and an eye lash curler. Eye lash curler! Can u believe it! She actually took out her eye lash curler in a crowded MRT and stated to curl her eye lashes in front of everyone. The fact that so many people were staring at her did not seem to bother her at all. She went on curling her eye lashes like she was doing it in her own room. After that she took out her lipstick and started applying it. What I felt was so interesting about her was the fact that she did not care what other people thought about her. After the lipstick came the blush. She applied blush in front of everyone. She was oblivious to the fact that by now everyone in the MRT was staring at her. It’s not really nice to be applying make up in public but I felt I learnt something from her. I learnt that you should not be too conscious of yourself.
The lady also looked like she is a very loud and boisterous person. You can just feel it when we see some people if they are quiet or not. It may not always be right but I think I am right about this lady. I find her to be so unique. If I was in her position, I would rather go out wearing no make up than to wear the make up in a crowded MRT. Even when she was curling her eye lashes, she was taking her own sweet time and was not bothered by her surroundings. She was holding a small mirror and was looking at it every minute. I think this lady is someone who gives a lot of importance to personal grooming. She seemed so disturbed by the fact that she was not wearing makeup that she decided to wear it in public. Another gross thing she did was to check her teeth. She opened her mouth really wide and started checking her teeth in the mirror. This lady seems to have no shame at all! More than shame, she has no manners! I felt it was very rude of her to be doing all these in public. Theses are stuff which are meant to be done at home and not in public.
I think this “eye lash curling” lady will be a very interesting character in a story. She could be a very comical character that will do weird stuff in public and not be bothered about it at all. Being a very self conscious person, I can never understand people who do such things in public. I will never do such a thing even in my wildest dreams. The “eye lash curling” lady can also be portrayed as negative character. An insensitive, rude and inconsiderate lady. To be honest, she struck to me as a person with a negative shades rather than someone who is humorous. I can’t explain why but I didn’t like something about this lady even though I did not speak with her. She also looked like a very strict person, someone who will shout and beat little children. To be honest, I didn’t like this lady one bit! There was nothing else interesting about this lady except for her odd behavior.
I would like to name this weird eye lash curling lady, Hui Ling. This name is a very common chinese name and since this person looks like a typical chinese lady, I feel this name suits her very well. Her address would be a HDB Block in Chinatown because she looks like someone who will be very involved in the chinese culture.
Person B:
The second person I saw was very interesting. Much more interesting than the first eye lash curling weird lady. The second person I saw was also in the MRT. The time was around six plus, a really bad time to take the train because it will be so crowded that you won’t even have place to stand. Then a lady came with her old mother in a wheel chair. Her mother looked extremely ill and old. She could not even move her mouth and even her face looked burnt and pale. No one offered the lady a sit for her and her mother; she had to ask for it! After she sat there she asked everyone who was standing near the area where her mother to switch off their hand phones. Of course, some people being typical Singaporeans pretended as if they didn’t hear her and continued to talk in the hand phones. She politely went to them and told them to switch off their hand phones. She even explained to them that her radio waves make her mother feel uneasy. I was observing her throughout this whole incident. Somehow, I began to like this lady a lot. I liked the way she only thought about the welfare of her mother and nothing else.
The way she confidently went up to strangers and told them to switch off their hand phones was something which I admired. Even after sitting down, she did not rest. She took out some kind of a notebook and started scribbling something on to it. Even though by now, so many people were staring at her and her mother she was not bothered. She was very focused and looked like a very determined person. Even though I didn’t talk to her, I could feel it. Physically, she was not very interesting. She was a tall, slender Chinese lady who could be in her early thirties. She had very long hair and was wearing some kind of pants and shirt. She didn’t look very feminine. More of a tomboy. Another interesting factor that I saw about her was that she did not look at peace. She looked like there were a lot of things troubling her. Her forehead looked like it was wrinkled because of stress. She looked like a very busy lady who does not even have free time for herself. The fact that she immediately took her book when she was given a seat could mean two things. One, she always likes to keep herself busy. Personally I feel that people who always keep themselves busy and who do not like free time are people with a lot of problems. Maybe they will start to worry about their problems when are they are free. Second, she could pretend like she is busy maybe because she doesn’t want to look at those people who were staring at her and her mother.
This lady can be a very interesting character in a story. A determined person who will face a lot of obstacles in her life. She also looked like someone who does not lead a very normal life. Someone who has sacrificed a lot in her life. It’s not easy to look after your elderly mother who is very ill. Despite these problems, she looks like a strong person who will be able to handle any situation. I like such people and found this lady to be a bit charismatic as well. She was not drop dead gorgeous or anything but from her body language and the way she spoke she seemed to be a nice lady. She constantly checked on her mother and asked her if she was ok. There are a lot of things which I feel I can learn from this lady. Her determination and her compassion towards her mother is something which all of us can learn from her. This lady affected me so much that I was thinking about her all the way home. I felt a bit sad for her too. She looked like someone who has gone through a lot of hardships and has a lot of responsibilities. Usually, I forget people who I observe in the train but this lady was different. I started thinking about her and where she was going. She was not a self conscious person at all just like the “eye lash curling’ weird lady but in a good way.
I would like to name person B Bobby. I have chosen this name because this person reminded me of Bobby from T1B1. Her mannerisms and the way she looked resembled Bobby a lot. Another reason why I chose this name is because the name can be used for a male too. Since person B is very tomboyish I decided to use this name. The address of the person would be a terrace house in Thompson Road because she looks like someone from a wealthy family.
