Character analysis
-Character
Story starts with character.
The character is…. The heart, the soul and nervous system of your story.
It is through you characters that the viewers experience emotions.
It is through you characters that they are touched.
Without CHARACTER you have no ACTION
Without ACTION, you have no CONFLICT
Without CONFLICT, you have no STORY.
Without STORY, you have no SCREENPLAY

When developing a character ask yourself:
1. Who is my character?
2. What does he want?
3. What is her quest?
4. What drives him to the resolution of the story. Why is the goal important in the first place.
Interior- cannot be seen in the movie
Exterior – can be seen in movies

Difference-

You must create you characters in relationship to other people or things.
- they experience conflict in achieving their dramatic need.
- - They interect with other characters
- They interest with their emotions.

Memory
Your memory is a wonderful cabinet of past incidents which you have experienced or been told.
These memories are points of references to you own past experiences.
WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW. (don’t)

Reflection for week 4

I was actually looking forward to week 4’s storytelling lesson because we get to watch a movie! I loved the idea of going to school to watch a movie. It’s like one of my fantasies when I was in primary and secondary school. I always used to wonder how nice it would be if I go to school and watch a movie instead of having a boring math or science lesson. Well, finally my dream came true when I came to FSV. I thought that we will be watching some ancient Greek tragedy but we watched election. Luckily, it was not some real Greek tragedy movie because I have read some Greek tales when I was younger and they were really creepy! One of the freaky stories I read was about a royal family and after the king dies in the story, the prince, his son will marry the queen who his is own mother! I found the story to be really disgusting! I was expecting some kind of weird movie to be screened today but luckily it was just a normal Hollywood movie. Wait, not a really normal movie maybe a bit more normal than the Greek tragedy that I read.

I was hoping that we will watch the movie in the preview theatre but I heard some other class was having intro to film there. Anyway, let me continue with my reflection. I felt the movie election was weird and a bit disturbing as well. I liked the idea that they showed the dark side of life; the bitter truth that even mean people can become successful and famous. What I disliked about the movie was the way they showed everything in a disgusting manner. Film is a form of visual art and art is meant to be beautiful so I don’t understand filmmakers who show their film in such an “ugly” way. You can argue that not all art is beautiful and there are some really weird art and all but I personally believe that art is meant to be beautiful and if its not beautiful, its not art at all! The long armpit-washing scene was also unnecessary. Infact, even the love making scenes were so gross and badly taken. I don’t understand why someone would want to take a movie of so poor taste. However, there are few things, which I like about the movie. I think the director has done a good job in portraying the different shades of all the characters, without making them entirely a positive or negative character. Well, that is how it is in real life; no one is entirely good or entirely bad. Another impressive factor about the movie was the way they started the movie. I liked the opening dialogue of the movie, the one about destiny. Overall, the movie was actually nice but its not a feel good movie at all, you just feel weird after watching it. Personally, I don’t like to watch such movies and I don’t understand why someone would pay for a movie ticket and watch something, which leaves them feeling bad at the end. One character that I liked was Paul Metzler. Even though he is shown like a dumb person, he has morals and ethics, which Tracy Flick doesn’t have. His nice character can be seen in the scene when he votes for Tracy instead for himself in the election. He says that it feels wrong to be voting for yourself. I feel this is natural goodness. Some people are just born with this kind of thing, they just know what is wrong and right and they don’t have to be told.

The discussions after the movie were really bad because nobody answered Mr. Ryan’s questions. I never understood why but whenever a teacher asks questions in class and when nobody answers them, I feel like laughing. I find it to be so humorous. Well, I’m guilty too, I was also very quiet. I’m always afraid that I will say the wrong thing and everybody will laugh at me. I need to get over that unnecessary fear of mine! Someone was arguing that the part about Tracy Flick’s affair with the teacher was episodic, meaning it is not needed in the movie. I feel that it was vital in the movie because it showed Tracy Flick’s negative shades. If that affair was not included in the movie, we wont know what Tracy is really capable of. We would think that she is just an over achieving and hardworking student who will do anything to get what she wants. The affair kind of showed her disgusting side. Another interesting thing to note about the movie is that the protagonist of the story is not a totally positive character and is not the “hero” of the film. I felt what Jim McAllister did at the end was not wrong at all. I know that cheating is wrong and all but he did it for a good purpose. Paul Metzler was definelty a much better person than Tracy Flick and he deserved it more than her. Although, Tracy was the one who really won in the elections it was only because of Paul. If he had decided to vote for himself, he would have won. Another great thing about the movie were the cupcakes! They looked so dense, creamy and most importantly yummy! I felt so hungry when I watched that scene. I felt like grabbing one of them! Then we were discussing about how the movie follows Aristotle’s definition of a Greek tragedy. How can there be like a formula for movie making? I find that to be so dumb, that the climax has to come in the middle and resolution at the end. Filmmaking is not maths or science where we need to follow a certain formula. Its totally up to the director on how he wants to take it, he does not need to follow any rules or formulas!

We were not really given any big assignments for this week. Yay! We still had to continue with our people watching assignments. Another yay again! I really like the people watching assignment because I love to people watch! Now I have to include more information like giving them a name and an address. Actually, these are things, which I wonder about when I am intrigued by someone who I have observed. This is going to be really fun because I kind of thought about their name and where they would live when I was watching them. Ok, I better get started on my assignment!

Lecture Notes 3

What is Plot?
Story is bigger than the plot itself – things tht occurred before the film started/after
- Plot is the actual arrangement of incidents that occurs in the film
- It is not the story itself, but the way the incidents are presented to the audience
- The structure of the play
- The most important feature of tragedy.

Beginning
- The incitive moment
- It must start the cause and effect chain.

Middle
- Climax
- It must be caused by earlier incidents and itself cause the incidents that follow it.

No longer accurately followed in modern stories (now its usually at the end)

End
- Resolution
- Must be caused by the preceding events but not lead to other incidents
- The end should resolve the problem created during the incitive moment.

Episodic Plots
- According to Aristotle, the worst kinds of plots
- The acts (episodes) succeed one another without the probability or necessity
- The only thing tying together the events in such a plot is the fact that they happen to the same person

Simple and Complex Plots
SIMPLE:
- Simple has only a “change of fortune”

COMPLEX:
- Complex has a reversal of intention “peripeteia” (when things change) and recognition “anagnorisis” (moment of recognition) connected with the catastrophe.

Things have changed – something that worked one way now works another way.

Character
- Character supports plot
- Personal motivations are connected to the cause-and-effect chain
- The protagonist in a tragedy should be renowned and prosperous (rich and famous), so his change can be from good to bad.
(the fall is greater for the rich and famous as opposed to taking things away from someone who is poor)
- (main character is not evil, still morally acceptable, still the hero, just tht he has a flaw. Something about him tht he doesn’t understand about the world and cos of tht he’s gonna be punished a.k.a “hamartia”[when the character doesn’t know enough]) – In the ideal tragedy, the protagonist will mistakenly bring about his own downfall – not becos his is sinful or weak – but becos he does not know enough
- this lack of self-knowledge is called “hamartia”

3 Act Structure
Advantage of working in three act structure is it breaks down the story and makes it more manageable
- 1st act: set up
- story begins with a goal-oriented character introduced at a point of crisis
- the character meets roadblocks produced by the plot and antagonist
someone wants something and its hard to get it – most movies
- 2nd act: confrontation
- action intensifies
- an event happens which forces the character to make his or her choice.
- 3rd act: resolution
- level of effort rises to new heights
- both plot and character is resolved
- but the main character either achieves or does not achieves his goal (essentially, the character can lose)

Super Vocabulary
- katharsis – emotional release that the audience experiences
- mimesis – imitation of the real world in art and literature
- anagnorisis – moment of recognition
- perepeteia – when things change from good to bad
- hamartia – lack of self-knowledge

When and Where was Aristotle Born
• Born on 384-322 B.C.E., in Stagira in North Greece.
What was Aristotle’s Poetics
• It was a much-disdained book in response to his teacher, Plato, who argues in The Republic that poetry is representation of mere appearances and is thus misleading and morally suspect.
What is the definition of Greek tragedy?
• Tragedy, then, is an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude; in language embellished with each kind of artistic ornament, the several kinds being found in separate parts of the play; in the form of action, not of narrative; with incidents arousing pity and fear, wherewith to accomplish its katharsis of such emotions. . . . Every Tragedy, therefore, must have six parts, which parts determine its qualityムnamely, Plot, Characters, Diction, Thought, Spectacle, Melody
• http://www.cnr.edu/home/bmcmanus/poetics.htm l
What is an example of a movie or a play that follows Aristotle’s definition of tragedy? Explain your selection.
• An example of a movie would be “Forbidden Planet” (1956)
• Forbidden Planet follows Aristotle’s rules for tragedy. A great man is brought down by a single tragic flaw ム his belief in his moral superiority, which supposedly follows his intellectual superiority. The same flaw destroyed the “noble Krell” as well. And, as Aristotle preferred, the story takes place over 20 years, yet is told almost entirely through exposition. (http://www.answers.com/topic/forbidden-planet-film)

Seek out and find Aristotle’s 6 required parts of a tragedy.
(ranked in order of importance)
I. PLOT
o Most important feature of tragedy
o Defined as “the arrangement of the incidents”

II. CHARACTER
o Supports the plot
o Must be able to evoke pity and fear in the audience
Seek out and find Aristotle’s 6 required parts of a tragedy.
III. THOUGHT
o Found “ where something is proved to be or not to be, or a general maxim is enunciated”
o Includes ‘themes’ of a play

IV. DICTION
o “expression of the meaning in words” which are proper and appropriate to the plot, characters and end of the tragedy
Seek out and find Aristotle’s 6 required parts of a tragedy.
V. SONG OR MELODY
o The musical element of the chorus
o Aristotle argues that the Chorus should be fully integrated into the play like an actor
o Should contribute to the unity of the plot

VI. SPECTACLE
o the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet
What is the “cause-and-effect” chain?
o Relates what may happen – what is possible according to the law of probability or necessity
o Beginning – incentive moment, must start the cause-and-effect chain
o The middle, or climax, must be caused by earlier incidents and itself cause the incidents that follow it

What is the “cause-and-effect” chain?
o The end, or resolution, must be caused by the preceding events but not lead to other incidents outside the compass of the play.
o E.g. In tragedy, it imitates not only a complete action, but also events inspiring fear or pity
How can a good plot create a “unity of action”?
o Structurally self-contained
o Incidents bound together by internal necessity
o Each action leading inevitably to the next with no outside intervention.
o Do not have to add in things that do not make a visible difference to the story.

What is the responsibility of characters in an Aristotelian tragedy?

• The characters of an Aristotelian tragedy are the second most important feature to the tragedy. The responsibility of the characters in an Aristotelian tragedy is to support the plot.
• For the characters to efficiently carry out the plot, these are the essential qualities to be considered.
• - Morally fine
• - Suitability to their roles
• - Realistic
• - Consistency of their personality
• - The necessity of having them
• - They should be represented as perfect, or at least better than reality

Aristotle originated the concept of the three act structure. What is it, and how does it apply to scriptwriting?

• The three act structure consists of a beginning, a middle and an end. According to Aristotle, every story should follow this structure.

• The Beginning introduces the audience to the setting, the characters, the situation they are in and their goal/aim.

• The Middle is when complications arise. Every problem the characters encounter is temporarily resolved. But it will all lead up to the biggest problem in the whole story, the climax.

• The End is where the loose strings in the story are tied up and the climax gets resolved. We will also see how the climax has affected the characters here. Because it is hard to sustain interest from audience for a long time after the climax, the story should end here.

• Similarly in scriptwriting, there should be a Beginning, Middle and an End. This is because a story should start from somewhere and end at somewhere with some things happening in between.

• The Beginning is there as it is essential to have a proper introduction to the audience. The Middle consists of the climax, which is the most affective part of the story. The story revolves around the climax. This is why a script MUST include it. Finally, everyone wants to know what happens in the end, nobody likes to be left hanging there at the climax, so when writing a script, it should be noted that there should be a conclusion.

What is the definition of Anagnorisis?

• It is the point in the plot especially of a tragedy at which the protagonist, who sees himself as a tragic hero, believes he has the supernatural ability to perceive events.
• The moment of recognition or anagnorisis will allow him to comprehend that kind of fate he has entangled himself with.

Reflection for week 3

I can’t believe its week 3 already! Time is really moving very fast. It just feels like yesterday when we had our first storytelling lesson. Lesson 3 was fun and I pretty much had a nice time in class. We stated the class by sharing one of our 50 word stories to the class and the others have to write a feedback of the story. Unfortunately, I did not choose one of my better ones. The story I read was called “Injustice”. I received mixed comments from my classmates. All of them said they did not find my story to have a proper conclusion and that it does not feel like a story. I actually agree with them because even when I was writing the story, I felt it wasn’t like a real story. It sounded like it is a part of story rather than a story itself. It wasn’t one of my best works because I found it very hard to write a whole story with a proper ending with only fifty words. Even when I was in Secondary school I was not able to write within a certain word limit, I tend to go over the word limit. Despite such difficulties I managed to come up with my 50 word stories, which are not very impressive.

Anyway, I found their comments to be useful because now I can change my story before they get graded! Sonia was the first one to read her story and I found her story to be very intriguing and dark even though the beginning was kind of clichéd. It was a kind of a murder mystery involving a nerd. Whenever someone hears a murder mystery about a nerd, we initially start to think that the nerd must have been the one who was murdered but in Sonia’s case it was the right opposite. The next story we heard was Colin’s story. I felt that the story was like a conversation than a story. It doesn’t grab the audience attention but the ending was kind of funny. Most of my classmates felt the same way too. The last story we heard was Pradip’s story, which was well written and interesting. I was hoping that Mr. Ryan would not ask me what doesn’t work in the story because I felt the story was good enough. Just my luck, he asked me! I never really felt comfortable criticizing someone’s work in front of them. Maybe it’s a Singaporean thing since from young we are trained to put our finger on our lips and not to talk or express our views. Luckily, Ben also felt that the Pradip’s story was good enough and had not much room for improvement.

After we shared our stories, we were given a break to continue on our Aristotle presentation. Ben and I had already finished our presentation last week itself so we were just looking through the slides. Being a very paranoid and self-conscious person, I was making sure that all our slides were perfect. I leant a lot from the presentations although they were a bit boring. Taking down the notes was bit of a hassle because everyone was presenting really fast and since my laptop was being used for most of the presentations, I did not take down most of it. Thank god, we exchanged our PowerPoint presentations after class. The assignment for the week was to people watch! Yay! That’s my favourite thing to do! Now, I have an excuse to watch people! Haha. Ok, I better post my people watching assignment!

Reflection for week 2

I found week two’s lesson to be a bit more relaxing. I was glad that there were no more stand around in a circle games anymore. Each of us was paired up with someone and we had to choose one of their openers to write our own story. I was paired with Vinod and since all of his openers were really good, I had a hard time choosing one. Finally I chose this opener, “Valerie lifts an eyebrow as she receives a call in the middle of Twilight.” We were only given twenty miinutes to come up with a story. Here is my story:

Valerie lifts an eyebrow as she receives a call in the middle of Twilight. Her heart sinks and her hands turn cold and clammy. She stands there for a moment not knowing what to do as tears trickle down her cheeks. Valerie feels as if a cloud of gloom had encircled the whole Earth. She takes a deep breadth and rushes to her room and looks at her family photograph. She slowly shakes her head causing her brown untangled hair to whip against her face. Valerie knows that her father loves her very much but she is not able to accept him again. Frigid air brushes her cheeks as she begins to think about her relationship with her father. She knows that she is wrong and she has to accept him back into her life but something was stopping her. Is it the way he treats her or is there something else, she begins to wonder. A million thoughts fill her head. The word “pain” was reverberating in her mind. Valerie knows that it is only fear that had gradually escalated into hatred. She runs to her father’s room and locks herself inside. Her hands tremble as she picks the phone with much hesitation. She feels her heart pounding as she slowly dials the number.

I feel that I could have done a much better job if we had to write the story in past tense. Whenever I write in present tense I can never truly focus on the story, I become more concerned with the tenses than the story. I feel I didn’t do justice to the opener.I actually became blank after writing the first sentence. The great thing about the opener I chose was that it was not very specific, meaning the story could be about anything. The Dominic wearing a hula girl outfit opener was rather specific and it definelty sounds like a comedy but Vinod’s opener was different. The opener could be that of a comedy, thriller or even horror. I felt that his opener would suit a emotional story so I created a story about a girl who recieves a call from her father who used to ill treat her when she was a child and now who wants to come back into her life. I didn’t give the story a proper ending as I wanted the audience to wonder if she would have called her father or not. Its mainly about the emtional dilemma Valerie faces after her father calls.

After that, some of us were chosen to read our stories to the class. All of their stories were very well written and I especially liked Colin’s story. It was descriptive and had the correct tenses. After listening to some of their stories, Mr.Ryan asked us if we knew who was the first person to tell a story. I thought it would be someone like a tribal village head or something like that but it is actually Aristotle, a greek philosopher. Everyone was paried up with someone and my pair was Ben. We had to answer a few questions about Aristotle and we have to present it in the next class. We learnt alot of stuff about him through the research. He has even written a book called “Poetics” and I guess the book is very useful for storytelling. I also learnt about greek tragedies and how famous they are. We will learn more about Aristotle in the next lesson. Well, thats about it. Lesson 2 was enjoyable!

Reflection for week 1

To be honest, I was actually a bit nervous when I entered the storytelling classroom. I had an idea that storytelling would be something like oral presentation or something where we have to come infront of the class and tell a story. The first thing we had to do was to think of 5 things that we’d bet our classmates dont know about us. I was kind of shocked when I saw what Mr. Ryan had written on the board. I was expecting something like “Why I chose FSV” or something like that. My mind was blank and I seriously didnt know what to write. Well, i didnt want my classmates to know everything about me so i had to think of something which wont be too perosnal. I thought for very long and finally came up with 5 things which were not very interesting. Let me share with you the the 5 things again.
1. I like to write.
2. I’m very bad at maths.
3. I love to eat spicy food.
4. I like to drink milkshake.
5. I like to shop.

Actually i was not very pleased with what I came up with because they were so mundane and boring but I had no choice because the time was up. The guessing game was fun because I knew certain things about my classmates which i totally didn’t know about. After that fun guessing game, we had to form a circle. I had a very bad feeling when Mr. Ryan asked us to form a cirlce. I dont know why but i never liked games which makes us stand around in a circle. I was prepared for the worst. We had to think of an adjective which sounds a bit like our name. That was not the bad part, we had to come up with a symbol or something and we have to repeat what everyone said before us before we could say our own.

Since I’m a really conscious person, I could not think of anything at all and the fact that I had to repeat my other classmates name didn’t make things easy for me. I was becoming more and more nervous as my turn came nearer and nearer. When my turn did come, i did something very stupid. I totally forgot that the adjective infront of my name had to rhyme with my name or atleast sound simillar. I said something so stupid like, “Cool Vani” which does not even a ryhme a bit. That was not it. I had thought of a thumbs up sign with “Cool Vani” but Wendy, the girl before me had just used that sign so I seriously didnt know what to do. By this time, everyone was waiting for me to come with something and my whole class staring at me didn’t make it easy for me to think of something on the spot. Finally I came up with ” Vain Vani”.

I was really relieved when we were told to go back to our seats. I found the first lesson to be very interesting as Mr. Ryan spoke about some really cool stuff. He said that there are stories all around us. I totally agree with that. Each and everyone of us has a story to tell. It doesnt matter if our story is interesting or funny. Its still a story. The world is filled with stories. Each individual in this world has a story of his own and no ones’ life story will be simillar to another person’s life story. We can never say that we dont have a story to write about because the world is filled with stories. Even our own life is a story.

As the lesson progresed, I was very impressed with the storytelling module. It was all about my favourite thing to do, to write stories. I was actually very sad after secondary school as thought i wont have the chance to write my narrative or descriptive stories anymore. Most of my older friends told me that in tertiarylevel, we could only write argumentative essays. I was very disappointed but after Mr. Ryan explained that storytelling is about writing stories. I was thrilled! Finally i could write my narrative stories again! I love to write stories! I feel you can escape to a totally new world, live a totally new life through stories and movies.

After that, Mr.Ryan told us to open up our laptops and said that all the assignments would be done in a blog for storytelling. I felt it was a very new approach. I have never had a blog before so it was something very new for me. It was something out of the norm.

Then came the really fun part. “Dominic puts on his hula girl outfit and enters the temple”.That was what Mr. Ryan wrote on the board! It was hilarious! We had to come up with a story with that as the opening sentence within twenty minutes. At first nothing came to my mind, only the vision of Dominic entering the temple with the hula girl outfit. Which was not a very pretty sight! Finally I came up with something within the twenty minutes. Its not very good but this is all I could think of within the twenty minutes:
Dominic puts on his hula girl outfit and enters the temple. The people at the temple begin to look at him weirdly. Dominic starts to dance in the middle of the temple infront of everyone. A huge crowd surrounds Dominic and people start to cheer for him. After dancing Dominic begins to skip around the temple searching for a place to rest. A priest comes near Dominic and warns to him to leave the temple but Dominic continues to skip around refusing to leave. The priest gives him an apple and walks away. Dominic finds a nice shaded area and begins to eat the apple. Dominic begins to feel dizzy and uncomfortable. He was starting to change into a real girl. Dominic begins to panic and he starts to scream. The priest smiles and leaves the temple with satisfaction.

The fact that the whole story had to be in present tense, made it more difficult! I am very used to writing stories in the past tense so it was a bit hard for me at first. This prevented me from totally focusing on the story as I was more concerned with my tenses. Some of us were chosen to share our stories with the rest of the class and most of them were really good. Dominic’s one was the funny one about the main character going to the temple to find a mate. Sonia’s story was something about a robbery which was also very intriguing. Wendy’s story about the little boy was also nice.

I felt the lesson was fun and enjoyable. The class had a nice relaxed atmosphere. I hope that all the storytelling classes in the future would be as fun and enjoyable like our very first one!

My Notes From Lecture

Proper writing format for all assignment:
1. Has to be in present tense. Eg. I will like shopping.
2. Has to be in third person
3. Active voice
This format is also used in scripts.

Passive Vs Active Voice
Passive voice
- Uses weak verbs
- Tells rather than shows whats going on
- Distances the reader from the story

Active Voice
- Uses strong action words
- Shows the action
- Uses an immediate sentence structure
- Conveys the story in a lively manner
- Always start sentence with subject

First person: I, me
Second person: You
Third person: He, She, Them

Questions to think about before writing:
1. Whose story am I telling?
2. What is the point of this story?
3. How can I engage the attention of the audience
4. Who is the main character and what is going to happen to him?

Tips for writing
* If you have a work in progress, never stop for the night if you are stuck
* Always solve the problem and keep going until you are in safer water
* If you cant get started on a project, start writing anyway. To do this you have to have some
words to type.
* It doesnt matter what you write. You will begin to move in your own rythm or pace soon

Homework!
Reflection(including the story)
12 opening statements which have to be in third person, present tense and with a active voice. Eg. James paces around the empty hallway. Eg. Karen opens the envelope, her hand shakes..
