A typical Singaporean teenager? I’m not sure if I’m one because I don’t really know what defines a typical Singaporean youth. But there are a few qualities of mine, which might be similar to a typical Singaporean teenager. For example, I’m usually paranoid about grades and such and most Singaporeans are like that too. They tend to worry alot about grades; some even commit suicide because they failed a paper. Well, I don’t think I’m that extreme; I wont kill myself over a grade. Singaporeans are usually very self -conscious. This can be seen very clearly when they speak. Sometimes, the whole class will be silent when a teacher asks a question. Students from other countries tend to more expressive and they are not afraid to express their opinions. To be honest, I’m also a very self-conscious person, which makes me a typical Singaporean teenager. Let me move on to why I feel that I am not a typical Singaporean.
Singaporean youth tend to focus alot on branded goods, which is something, which I do not do. Most Singaporeans do not follow their dream, they go with the flow. They just do what everyone else is doing. Sometimes, I wonder if they even have a dream. Maybe they feel it is “safe” not to follow their dreams. I’m not a typical Singaporean in this aspect because I do believe in dreams and I feel that everyone should follow their dreams. Singaporeans also tend to be greedy. For example, if there is a buffet, they will pile up their plates with food even if they know they wont be able to finish it. That is something, which I will never do. Listening to songs sung by local bands, chatting online till midnight, taking neoprints with friends, buying something I do not like just because it is cheap. All these are stuff, which I have not done and I don’t think I will ever do them. Now, I’m beginning to realize that I’m not a typical Singaporean youth! Which has to be a good thing!
